Winemaking along the Loire River dates back to the Gallo-Roman times. It was the Benedictine Monks who largely created and maintained vineyards and thus created vine culture in such areas we know well today like Sancerre, Vouvray, and Anjou. Cabernet Franc is the dominant grape in Anjou and the Biotteau family (four generations of making wine) captures the magic of this grape that smells of chalk, sandal wood, dried flowers, deep currant and licorice. Ambient natural yeasts, no additives, no filteringand the use of stainless steel produce this delightfully approachable wine with lush roundness, mineral notes, dark black cherryand harmonious tannins.
Full and powerful with notes of black cherry, roasted red pepper and fennel. It’s spicy and tannic, with secondary profiles of hard herbs like rosemary and some leather. Pair with some fatty and rich, or put down in the cellar for a few years.
This area of the Anjou-Villages falls on a geological fault-line. Half of the vineyards are grown in slate soils, the other half is grown in Parisian white limestone (known as the Paris-Basin). Thus all of our wines here are a blend of several vineyards with extremely individual terroir. The Anjou Rouge comes from 25-30 years old vines. The blend is 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is made using no additives, and is macerated for 10 days in ambient temperature with ambient yeasts. The wine is non-filtered and is aged in stainless steel tanks.
